Steve Jobs a happy man this morning

An interesting piece by Daniel Lyons of Forbes.com, Microsoft Vista: Not ‘People Ready’

To quote the author,

“Why not at least switch to an Apple Computer Mac? Apple’s new operating system is stable, reliable and easy to use. The applications are simple, gorgeous and work well together. And they’re here. Today. Steve Jobs must be waking up a happy man this morning.”

When all six versions of Windows Vista (yes, six versions) finally ship, I’m betting it will be at least 5 years before 25% of the US Windows market has adopted Vista.

Have you considered the hardware upgrades you might need to run Vista in all its glory? Start saving.

Blog tweaks

I finally got around to moving this blog over to PHP. No big deal. Took a matter of minutes actually. Unfortunately, the PHP-based security plugin I wanted to use with MT is just not cutting it – which is most likely my fault given the configuration of things on the server (said configuration dictated by my paying client’s needs/requirements and not my own.)

My current host is great in all respects and have helped our business grow. However, I’ve been giving serious consideration to moving dixson.org to a new host that supports PHP5, MySQL 4.1, Ruby, Rails, Lighttpd, Subversion, and WebDAV. Since I’m now doing some development using Ruby on Rails, I want a host that fully supports ROR right out of the box. Stay tuned.

Snowboarding

Last week we stayed at the Mountain Club at Loon Mountain and spent a few days skiing. Got both kids in lessons and I decided to try snowboarding. It was my first time so I took a 2 hour ‘intro’ class with two other people and then spent the rest of the day on my own. It was awesome and I’m already planning another trip back. Been checking out the gear I want to get. Would make a nice 40th birthday present (hint for Kirsten.) ;-)

Cate and Abby loved their ski lessons. One afternoon, Abby and Kirsten took the gondola up to the summit and skied down together – this just blew me away. I couldn’t believe how it all just came together for Abby and was proud to see her skiing confidently and loving it. Cate, by her second lesson, was turning and stopping like a pro and wants to go back as soon as she can.
